Scholarship established to honor the late Angelyn Poole

The friends and family members of the late Angelyn Poole have established a scholarship in her name at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

A friend, Carolyn Kelly, launched the Angelyn Richardson Poole Scholarship with the goal to endow it within five years at a minimum of $10,000.

Black Line

Poole, who was a staff member in UNCP’s School of Education for 13 years, died on March 30, 2009. A popular member of the campus community, she was named Employee of the Year for 2005-06.

The scholarship will benefit a business education major who is either a full or part-time student with demonstrated financial need. The award is renewable.

Poole was a Bladen County native. Patricia Lewis, daughter of Angelyn, said Poole was a long time and faithful member of Clark Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Tar Heel, N.C., where Rev. James Davis is Pastor.

“When I think of Angelyn, I think of an angel,” Carolyn Kelly, a friend of Angelyn’s said. “She was a quiet and humble person who touched people’s lives. She loved her family; they were her life. Angelyn was a great friend. Her passion was helping others, her friendship knew no boundaries.

“I count it an honor to have this privilege and opportunity to be a part of the birth of the Angelyn Richardson Poole Scholarship,” she continued. “I wanted to see her spirit continue to influence people.

“Her passion was helping people, young and old,” Kelly said. “Her spirit touched the hearts of people that were fortunate to know her, and this scholarship will continue her legacy and provide a way for someone to go a little further with their education.”

Kelly thanked the UNCP community for the opportunity to honor her friend with a scholarship and for the outpouring of love for Poole in a time of sorrow.

Angelyn is survived by a son, Willie Lewis; four daughters, Patricia and Cassandra Lewis, Latishia Richardson and Jessica Poole; mother, Viola Richardson, two sisters Addie Smith and Shirlean Butler and a brother, Artis Horne.

Poole’s daughter, Patricia, said the scholarship is a tribute to her mother.

“The establishment of this scholarship is important to me so that my mother’s name and the kind of person she was will live on,” Lewis said. “She was dedicated to education and loved UNCP.”

On behalf of the University, Chancellor Allen C. Meadors thanked Kelly and Lewis.

“We are all saddened by the loss of Angelyn, but the University community is honored by her friends and family who are honoring her memory through this scholarship,” Chancellor Meadors said.

Teresa Oxendine, director of donor relations, stated, “I want to thank the family and friends of Angelyn Poole for their generosity and for giving me the honor of working with them to establish this scholarship to honor the memory of Angelyn.”
