Chancellor Search Committee updated on response to ads
Early response to advertisements for the position of chancellor at UNC Pembroke has been heavy, consultant Howard Jessamy reported to the Chancellor Search Committee on November 23.
More than 600 inquiries and 22 formal applications have been received, said Jessamy, who is with the executive search firm Witt/Kieffer. He provided an update on the search to the committee.
“It’s early in the recruitment process, and we usually receive the strongest applications at the end,” said Witt/Kieffer consultant Lucy Leske. Leske said a password-protected Web site will go online December 21 for the Search Committee to review applications.
Search Committee Chairwoman Dr. Freda Porter appointed a subcommittee to finalize questions by January 14 for upcoming interviews. It will consist of Drs. Sherry Edwards, Olivia Oxendine and Dwight Pearson, Grady Hunt and Lorna Ricotta.
The full committee gave input on questions and candidate evaluation sheets and heard about responses to an online survey. Of the 404 responses, 38 percent came from graduates, 36 percent from faculty, 22 percent from staff, followed by students and community members, Jessamy said.
Respondents rated highest, in both the short- and long-term, the issue of retention and graduation rates. Building high quality programs, personal integrity and experience in academia were also rated highly.
UNCP has advertised the position in a diverse spectrum of magazine, newspaper and Internet publications. There is a link to a Chancellor Search Web site available at http://www.uncp.edu/chancellorsearch/.
Key wording in the advertisement: “The University is seeking a dynamic, bold leader to become a full, contributing member of the community, embodying all that the University and region represent, to work collaboratively with the internal and external community to build an exciting future for the University and region. Seasoned management, fund-raising, and organizational skills are essential. Candidates may exemplify their potential for the position through academic qualifications, such as a terminal degree and an extensive record of scholarship and teaching, or through a record of outstanding professional leadership and achievement.”
The next meeting of the full Search Committee will be Jan. 14, 2010. The committee and UNC General Administration hope to have a decision on a new chancellor by April 2010.
