Grant to boost faculty development and student retention
A $2 million, two-year federal grant will bolster faculty development and retention of second-year students at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
Eight faculty members have been awarded grants to continue their education during the spring 2009 semester through the U.S. Department of Education grant.
Five staff members were hired this spring in the Center for Academic Excellence to strengthen advising and tutorial services for the second-year college experience.
“The grant will have a significant impact on our ability to better serve our students,” said Dr. William Gash, associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and project director.
The grant was funded from the Native American-serving Nontribal Institutions (NASNTI) program. Darcy Hayes is UNCP’s project coordinator.
The grant targets faculty seeking terminal degrees and awards up to $3,000 a semester for initial studies and $5,000 a year for late stages of pursuing a doctorate or other terminal degree.
In the spring semester, grants were awarded to Cherry Beasley, Dena Evans, Rosemarie Pilarczyk and Jennifer Twadell in the Nursing Department, Judy Losh in the School of Education, Cammie Hunt-Oxendine in the School of Business, Frederick Stephens in the Social Work Department and Tracy Wiggins in the Music Department.
Five full-time positions were funded in the Center for Academic Excellence – three in advising, one to coordinate the second year program and a Web developer. Center Director Saundra Richardson said the grant will strengthen retention efforts
“Like most universities, we have focused on successful outcomes for our first-year students, and this grant will allow us to continue programs, including tutoring and advising, for students who need those services in their second year,” Richardson said.
Headquartered in the Mimosa building, the program added five new staff members and 11 faculty advisors. Six part-time tutors and a graduate assistant will also be hired.
New advisors are Mark Hunt, Rosemarie Glenn and Laura Riegner. Second-year coordinator is Doug Smith, who comes on board February 27. Web developer is Yoshi Guy.
Faculty advisors are Dr. Meredith Storms, Mary Klinikowski, Dr. Shilpa Pai Regan, Debra Branch and Dr. Anna Netterville from the College of Arts and Sciences; Drs. Emily Long, Frankie Powell and Olivia Oxendine from the School of Education and Sharon Bell, Don Soucy and Dr. Jim Frederick from the School of Business.
Awarded in October, the grant program is moving ahead swiftly in early January.
“At this time, we are researching student data to locate second-year students who have not declared a major, so that we may reach out to them,” Richardson said. “We are developing an array of programs in areas of leadership, career counseling and more to serve this group.”
