Ronette Gerber joins UNCP’s legal staff

The University’s new assistant university counsel is pleased to return to her alma mater.

Ronette GerberAfter 12 years in the fast-paced world as a litigation attorney, Ronette S. Gerber has come home to the town and school that have always been so close to her family’s heart.

“It’s good to be home,” she said.

A 1989 graduate of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Gerber has maintained close ties with the University and her classmates.

“I met my best friends here at the University and we still get together regularly,” Gerber said. “I look forward to homecoming every year and always come to the game with a group of fellow UNCP grads.”

She has also served as a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors.

As a student 20 years ago, Gerber lived on campus in a very different environment.

“It was a very different campus then - fewer students, smaller departments,” she said. “Today, there is so much more for students to do! And it’s good to see all of the opportunities for the students and community to interact.”

After completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in history at UNCP, Gerber earned a Master of Public Administration degree and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a licensed member of the North Carolina State Bar and has thus far practiced exclusively in civil law.

The new assistant university counsel will be busy with issues from employment to contracts and public safety to civil law. She reports to Joshua D. Malcolm, university counsel and chief of staff.

“Ronette has been on the job a few months now and is doing an outstanding job,” Malcolm said. “Her civil litigation experience is a tremendous asset and she has hit the ground running from day one.

“The University was fortunate to attract someone with Ronette’s considerable legal experience,” he said.

Gerber said the legal work at UNCP is a good fit for her.

“This position offers a fast-paced environment with a family atmosphere,” Gerber said. “Education law is such a vast category - every day is different and every day presents a new experience - this is the type of climate that I really enjoy.”

She is the mother of three children: Greyson, 8, Garrett, 7, and Lauren, 5. Gerber is the daughter of Ron Sutton, an attorney and state legislator and Geneva Chavis Sutton, a retired nurse and a 1995 UNCP graduate.
