UNCP organizes to aid veterans

UNC Pembroke is making it easier for veterans and active duty soldiers to continue their education.

The University has created a Veterans Education and Transition Assistance Program to help veterans navigate through higher education and the new G.I. Bill.

A new Web site was unveiled this summer - www.uncp.edu/veterans/ - and Aubrey Swett was installed as the point person to answer veterans’ questions and guide them toward admissions and financial aid through distance education and graduation.

“My role is to put them in contact with the appropriate experts on campus to help them,” said Swett, who is a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Marines and also director of UNCP’s Center for Leadership and Service. “I am a one-stop resource for veterans to begin the process, but the veteran service is a team effort across campus.”

Swett also is a member of the Student Veterans Association who works with students who are veterans. He said the new G.I. Bill is bringing post-9/11 vets back to school.

“There is a lot of interest in the new G.I. Bill,” he said. “In some ways, it is more flexible than the old benefit.”

For instance, the benefits of the new bill are transferrable to a veteran’s spouse or children. And, it pays in-state or out-of-state tuition without reducing other benefits, such as the housing or book stipend.

With classrooms and an office on Ft. Bragg, UNCP was recently named by G.I. Jobs magazine as one of the nation’s “military friendly” institutions.

“Our new Veterans Education and Transition Assistance is another way we can serve our military veterans better,” Swett said.
