Rep. Hackney, a Democrat who represents Orange, Chatham and Moore counties, was touring several Southeastern North Carolina counties. He was invited to Pembroke by state Rep. Ron Sutton.

The speaker met with Chancellor Charles R. Jenkins and his staff. The two-and-a-half hour visit included a tour of campus and lunch in the University Center cafeteria with faculty and students.

“We would like to thank the speaker for taking time to visit UNC Pembroke,” Chancellor Jenkins said. “We were able to share a great deal of information about the University, our region and our needs.”

It was Rep. Hackney’s first visit to campus. He was elected speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives in January 2007 at the start of his 14th term in office.

Prior to becoming Speaker, Hackney was House Democratic leader for one term, House Majority leader for one term and Speaker Pro Tempore for two terms.

Since 1974, Speaker Hackney has been a partner in the Epting & Hackney law firm in Chapel Hill, N.C. In addition, he and his brother operate a cattle farm in Chatham County where they grew up.

Chancellor Jenkins said the visit was productive.

“We were delighted about this visit and the opportunity to meet with Speaker Hackney,” Chancellor Jenkins said. “I believe he was most impressed by what we are doing. It was a good visit.”
