Joshua Malcolm, UNC Pembroke’s chief counsel, was recognized as one of the state’s top in-house attorneys.
From North Carolina Lawyers Weekly, a professional journal, the award was presented in Charlotte, N.C., at the 3rd Annual In-House Leaders in Law award ceremony.
Eleven attorneys from the state’s top corporations, including Bank of America, Duke Energy and Lowe’s, were honored.
Lawyers Weekly Publisher Tonya Mathis told the crowd at the Crowne Plaza Hotel that the recipients not only demonstrated excellence in the practice of law but also in contributing to their communities and balancing work and family life.
The recipients of the award represented lawyers who work with everything from hospitals to grocery store chains to energy companies. In each case, the lawyers recognized showed a willingness to tackle the challenges facing their employers.
Those honored in addition to Malcolm were Keith Agisism, Bank of America; Nancy B. Aycock, University Health Systems; Y. Canaan Huie, N.C. House of Representatives, Office of the Speaker; Stephen A. Mayo, Bank of America; Richard G. Pratt, Lowe’s; David P. Sousa, Medical Mutual Insurance; Susan Sowell, Fair Point Communications; John P. Stanley, Lenovo; Jason Stevens, Food Lion; and Lisa F. Vaughn, Duke Energy.
Malcolm joined UNCP in 2008 as assistant university counsel and was quickly promoted to lead counsel. He also serves as chief of staff for the Office of the Chancellor.
Active in the community, Malcolm currently serves as chair of the three-member county Robeson County Board of Elections and chair of Pembroke’s ABC Board. He also served as Chairman of the NC Bar Association, Education Law Section, in 2008-09.
A 1992 UNCP graduate, Malcolm serves as an adjunct in the University’s Master of Public Administration program.
An Air Force veteran and a graduate of N.C. Central University School of Law, Malcolm is a licensed member of the North Carolina Bar. For the University, he handles a wide variety of campus legal issues, including some public safety, civil, contract and employment matters.
