The three UNCP student publications won 10 awards in the 2010 North Carolina College Media Association contest. The awards were presented at its annual conference held on February 19 at Appalachian State University.
Jake Bayog won third place in nonfiction for “Passport to Nowhere.”
Oliver Spivey won third place in poetry for “In the Projection Booth.” Spivey also works for The Pine Needle where he writes movie reviews.
The faculty adviser for The Aurochs is Dr. Karen Helgeson of the English & Theatre Department faculty.
The Indianhead yearbook also won four awards, including a Best of Show. Danielle Powers won third place for her sports copy, “Playoffs!”
Joel Beachum won third place in photography for his look at the “Relay for Life” fundraiser.
Tiffany Schmidt, last year’s Editor, won an honorable mention for student life copy. Schmidt graduated in May 2010.
Sara Oswald of the English & Theatre Department faculty is the Indianhead faculty adviser.
The Pine Needle newspaper won two awards. Sports Editor Nick Phillips’ article, “UNCP Football: The Right Decision,” won third place in the feature story category.
The Pine Needle also won an honorable mention award for staff writer Jon Baez’s news story, “Campus Flooding: Geological Mystery.” Baez graduated in December 2010.
Dr. Judy Curtis of the Mass Communication Department faculty is The Pine Needle’s faculty adviser. Dr. Curtis also is the 2010-11 chair of the Student Publications Board, which oversees the student publications.
“I’m very proud of all our publications and congratulate all the students who work so hard to produce them. It just shows that our students and UNCP can compete head-on with any other university in the state and win,” Dr. Curtis said.
UNCP entries were judged in the same over 6,000 enrollment category as the state’s powerhouse universities, UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State University and East Carolina University.
