Joe Oxendine honored by Catawba College

UNC Pembroke’s Chancellor Emeritus Joseph B. Oxendine was awarded Catawba College’s Adrian L. Shuford, Jr. Award for Distinguished Service in a ceremony in Salisbury on April 15.

Joseph OxendineDr. Oxendine has served as interim president of Catawba since March 2011. A 1952 Catawba alumnus, he presided as the college searched for a permanent president. He will step down in May following commencement exercises.

Catawba College presents the Adrian L. Shuford, Jr. Award to an individual or individuals who have dedicated their time, talent, or resources to support the college, its programs and the broader community.

Catawba College’s board of trustees chair Paul Fisher described Dr. Oxendine as “a man who has had Catawba in his life for more than six decades.”

Noting the arrival of Catawba’s new president, Brien Lewis, whose first day on the job was April 16, Dr. Oxendine encouraged those gathered, “to rally around the new leadership and to rally around the college.”

Dr. Oxendine came to Catawba as a student in 1948. He played baseball and football for the school; after graduating, he played baseball for a year in the minor leagues for the Pittsburg Pirates. He earned a master’s and eventually a doctorate of education degrees from Boston University.

Dr. Oxendine served as chancellor of UNC Pembroke from 1989 to 1999. In March 2011, after he had been retired for almost 12 years from UNCP, Catawba College’s trustees asked him to serve as interim president.

Catawba has acknowledged Oxendine’s role at the college several times through the years.  The college has presented him with the O. B. Michael Award, named him a Distinguished Alumnus and awarded him an honorary degree. He now serves on the college’s board of trustees and has a place in Catawba’s Sports Hall of Fame.
