Tim Brooks joins UNCP’s Board of Trustees

Tim Brooks was appointed by Gov. Beverly Perdue to the board of trustees of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Tim BrooksBrooks is president of HealthKeeperz Inc., an integrated community and home-based healthcare company headquartered in Pembroke. He was sworn in on January 25 and is filling an unexpired term on the board that ends on June 30, 2013.

Chancellor Kyle R. Carter welcomed Brooks to the board of trustees.

“Tim and the entire Brooks Family have a strong commitment to UNC Pembroke and our community,” Chancellor Carter said. “We welcome him to the board of trustees and look forward to having his business expertise as part of our board.”

A Pembroke native, Brooks will give up his seat on UNCP’s Foundation board of directors, where he had served three years and was its secretary. The UNCP Foundation is an independent, non-profit corporation that raises, administers and distributes private contributions to the university.

“I am pleased to join the board of trustees and continue contributing to the success of the university and its students,” Brooks said. “UNC Pembroke is very important to this community and to my family.”

Brooks’ family is a remarkable success story of how education helps individuals and communities. His father, Howard, a 1963 UNCP graduate, is a pharmacist and founder of HealthKeeperz, which employs nearly 400 people in home health, medical equipment and supplies and a pharmacy.

Brooks’ grandfather, Peter, like many of his generation, left school before graduating, but his faith in education came full circle in the lives of his children and grandchildren.

“My grandfather didn’t finish school, but he made sure his children did,” Brooks said. “He had a plan for each of my uncles.”

Among Peter Brooks’ sons are Martin, a physician; David, a veterinarian; Dalton, who has a Ph.D. in physics, and Paul, the elected chair of the Lumbee tribe. The next generation is also contributing to making the community healthier.

“This family has been instrumental in contributing to making this a healthier community,” said Wendy Lowery, UNCP’s vice chancellor for Advancement. “They give back to their community is so many ways.”

In 2006, the Brooks family established an endowed professorship in nursing to honor Tim’s late mother, Brenda B. Brooks. The home health clinical setting in UNCP’s new Health Sciences Building is also named for her.

Tim Brooks is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, where he majored in public health. He is active in his church and the local community, serving on First Bank’s Pembroke community board of directors.
