The Department sponsors a student group, "Tomorrow's Religious Leaders," for those considering a vocation in ministry or religious education and for those expecting to play an active role in the lay leadership of a church, synagogue, mosque, or temple. Activities include monthly meetings in the Sampson Building, Room 103), workshops on topics relating to religious service, visits to religious services to experience various styles of worship and preaching, and opportunities to "shadow" religious professionals. Fall Semester, 2010, the group held a retreat at the Center for Community Action's Outdoor Adventure & Education Center, which included canoeing on the Lumber River and connecting nature with spirituality. For the Fall Semester, 2012, the group is in hiatus. However, if "two or more" students are interested in reactivating the group for the Spring Semester, 2013, contact Dr. David Nikkel.
The Department also sponsors the UNCP Chapter of Theta Alpha Kappa--National Religious Studies Honor Society for qualified students. Since its founding in 2005, our Chapter has inducted 34 students.
As of Spring Semester, 2013, the Department of Religion and Philosophy has 23 Majors and 16 Minors. Over the past eight years, an average of 8 Majors have graduated each year.
