Smith was a wrestler at UNCP during the Fall 2005 semester. He also ran track at UNCP.

Smith was also a biology major and a member of Bully Breed, a motorcycle club.

According to close friends and teammates, Smith was a very positive person, and he had the ability to share that with those around him.

"I'm going to miss how he was outgoing and lived life to the fullest. You never see him mad about nothing he was just a happy person all around," said Andrae Wallace, a Fayetteville State student and friend to Smith.

Many UNCP students also knew Smith from the school dances.

"He was always the first one on the dance floor," said Melanie Baldridge a junior at UNCP and close friend to Smith. "He was always the center of attention, he loved to make everyone laugh," Baldridge also said.

"I'm going to miss his ability to listen," Baldridge said. "He was always there for me when I needed him no matter what. One of the last things he said to me was I should never frown. No matter what is bothering me, I should never let it put a frown on my face."

Smith was a member of and many of his friends have left messages for him on his page.

Jessica Davis, a UNCP student wrote, "Serrell you will always be my dancing boy. I won't be seeing you in the UC on a rainy day because you will forever be with me in my heart."

UNCP student Jessica Fox wrote, "Serrell I can't believe you're gone, I just saw you the other day. It's crazy how God works in mysterious ways. Wish you were still here, you are going to be missed everywhere; whether it's dancing, in class, seeing you riding your bike down the street, or just chillin with your people. Everyone loved you. You are in a much better place now though…watch over us all we all need it.

There was a moment of silence for Smith Jan 11., 2006, at the UNCP basketball game.

Phi Beta Sigma fraternity rescheduled their probate out of respect for Smith’s passing.

Smith was a 2003 graduate of Douglas Byrd Senior High School in Fayetteville, NC.
