Hurricane plans

By Pine Needle Staff

Hurricane season is underway and Chancellor Allen C. Meadors commented on the school's storm-related procedures in an Aug. 30 message to the university community.

"I encourage all of you to have adequate plans for ensuring the safety of your family and properties," Meadors said.

Meadors encouraged any student or employee who is in "a driving situation that is dangerous" because of flooding or other dangerous conditions to notify her or his faculty or supervisor and not take any "perceived risks."

"Even though the best decision may be to hold classes as normally scheduled or on a delayed basis, we do not want any students or employees to put themselves in dangerous situations," Meadors said.

The chancellor said the university has an obligation to students to ensure that operations continue to the best of our ability.

He said some 2,500 students live on or near campus and depend upon faculty, staff and administrators to provide them with information and guidance. In bad weather, the community can check the university website at www.uncp.edu for updates on operations.

"It is important to let your students know that we do not close just because the public schools do," Meadors said. "A public school system has an entirely different set of circumstance than a university.

On tropical storm days, university police check road conditions with Pembroke and Robeson County law enforcement and North Carolina highway patrol.

They also check the National Weather Service for current and projected weather conditions. Then they recommend about university operations based on those sources.

In the past, UNCP has held Saturday classes and other campuses have cancelled holiday breaks. "We will work with the university community on this," Meadors said.
