Fashion show, auction planned

By Hannah Simpson
Staff Writer

Student Government Association planed for a student fashion show, reported on a textbook auction for students and planned a nightwalk  at its meeting on Aug. 26.

SGA is planning a multi-cultural fashion show that showcases clothing created and modeled by UNCP students. The main aspect of the fashion show will be multi-cultural, said SGA President Marvin “Tubby” Jacobs.

Jacobs said that there have been “a lot of concerns about the representations of cultures at Pembroke (University).”

Jacobs said that he hopes students will be willing to participate and represent the 26 different cultures that UNCP has in the show.

He said that the fashion show will “celebrate cultures, as well as celebrate fashion.”

The tentative date is set for Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. at GPAC.

The SGA also discussed plans for auctioning used textbooks. Students will bid on books, with the seller signing a contract that will verify the condition of the materials.

The nightwalk is run by the Student Issues subcommittee.

The group conducts weekly patrols of the campus grounds, checking that the on-campus emergency phones and streetlights are working properly. Due to recent construction, the campus grounds have hazard zones, and at some times the safety equipment, such as emergency phones, may not be working right.

Jacobs also said that students need to know that the SGA is available for them.

Mo Mutima, vice president of the SGA, agreed with the Jacobs.

“We are looking to actively and pro-actively make a difference in people’s lives,” Mutima said.

“My goal this year is not for the students to come to the SGA,” said Jacobs. “It’s for the SGA to go to the students.”

The SGA meets Wednesdays at 6 p.m. in the University Chavis Center, room 213.
