Spanish starts new honor society

By Erica Vaught
Staff Writer

The Spanish honor society was established at UNCP in the Spring semester of the 2006 school year.

Dr. Enrique Porrua is the adviser and Christelle Lebeau is the president.  Both are hoping for expansion.

“I would really like to see all Spanish majors join Sigma Delta Pi,” Porrua said.

Lebeau said, “I think the main purpose is promoting two main goals-Spanish as an academic principle and service.”

“Even though it has Greek letters, it is an academic honor society-not sorority or fraternity,” Lebeau said.

According to Lebeau, Spanish must be your major or your minor or have your concentration in Spanish in order to be a member of the society.

You must also have a 3.0 GPA in your Spanish classes.

You have to be in the top 35 percent of your class and have 18 credits in Spanish.

There are two fees, one for national and the other for charter on campus. The national fee is a one-time payment of $20 for a lifetime membership in the group.

The fee for the campus society is determined by the members and must be paid annually by the members.

The initiation ceremony will be Nov. 8 and is mandatory for new members to attend.

Anyone who is interested in joining the Spanish Honor Society can contact Porrua at 587-6428 or at Contact Lebeau at 522-5579 or by email at
