‘Paint the Town Pink’ raises money, awareness

By Glory Attaochu
Staff Writer

Paint the Town Pink raised some $4,500 for breast cancer awareness on Oct. 18, all of which will go the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

“The student turn out went above and beyond my expectations,” said Chelsea Prior, who organized the fundraiser. It was a great success, she said.

The bleachers were painted by the sea of students wearing pink shirts who came out to support Prior’s event.

A 21-year-old senior public relations major, Prior organized the fundraiser at the women’s soccer game against Armstrong Atlantic.

She undertook the mission as her senior project in order to get exposure for the breast cancer campaign, particularly on the UNCP campus.

Prior’s sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, joined her in creating the “Paint the Town Pink Breast Cancer Benefit.”

Breast cancer is the sorority’s national community service project.

They sold T-shirts that said either “Think Pink,” “Pretty in Pink” or “Real Men Wear Pink.”

Prior also raised money through sales of snacks and sponsorships.

During half-time of the soccer game, a tribute was made to those on the UNCP campus who are affected by breast cancer.

People on the field were either breast cancer survivors or people who have family members who suffer from breast cancer and couldn’t attend the game.

They went to the center of the field with pink and white balloons, and after a moment of silence they let the balloons go and everyone watched as they floated into the sky.

It was an emotional moment for participants.

It also was an eye opener to see how many people on the UNCP campus are affected by breast cancer, either through family members or friends.

Although the soccer team lost 2-0, Prior said she appreciated the effort that the athletic department made in order to make the fundraiser a success.
