New director has high hopes and plans for writing center
By Heidi O’Conner
Staff Writer

There is a new face greeting students in the University Writing Center.
Dr. Teagan Decker has joined UNCP from the University of Washington, where she worked as the Assistant Director of the English Department's Writing Center.
This is the first time the position at UNCP has been filled by a faculty member.  Previously, the role of director was a staff position.
Dr. Decker teaches two English composition classes in addition to her duties as director.
She stresses that the Writing Center is not just for students wishing to work on their English papers, but for any subject from biology to history.
There are six, trained and paid, student tutors who rotate in to help students perfect their essays. The student tutors can help at any point in the writing process, from brainstorming to revision.
Dr. Decker hopes to increase the number of tutors next semester with the addition of a Writing Center Theory and Practice course to the English course listing.
This class, listed as ENG 2990, will be three credit hours  and involves readings, writing assignments and supervised tutoring practice.
Dr. Decker is working on fitting the course into the general requirements to encourage more students from across departments to bring their experience to tutoring.  Students can drop by the center and pick up a flyer for the class.
Dr. Decker also hopes to expand the Writing Center to include more space for tutors and students.
The facility now has four computers, but no printing capabilities.
The Writing Center can be found in room 131 of the Dial building.
            The University Writing Center is open Monday-Thursday 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
