The North Carolina Campus Compact has named Aubrey Swett its 2012 Civic Engagement Professional of the Year.

Swett is the founding director of the Office of Community and Civic Engagement.

The Campus Compact consists of 42 North Carolina colleges and universities, and its mission is to encourage civic engagement among college students to promote lifelong commitment to building strong communities.

The North Carolina Civic Engagement Professional of the Year recognizes an individual who has deepened the engagement of campus, impacting community and campus.

"Mr. Swett's leadership in civic engagement is a tremendous asset to UNC-Pembroke," Chancellor Kyle R. Carter said.

"He and his staff keenly understand the importance of preparing our students with strong leadership skills that will elevate their chosen communities. It was an honor to present Aubrey with this prestigious award."

Swett joined UNCP in 2003 and became director of the Office of Community and Civic Engagement in 2006, and the office has grown from two to seven people under his leadership.

"The recognition is nice, but it would not have been possible without the people who work in this office and the support of the University," Swett said.

Swett said Chancellor Carter and Provost Ken Kitts offered "exceptional support" and "the growth of this office is evidence of that."

Sweet added although his name appears on the award, he would not have won it without the help from staff and students.

"Without their effort and support this award could not be achieved," Swett said.
