Banners hang in front of Old Main, the University's oldest building, to
celebrate UNCP's 125th anniversary.

Students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members gathered in the English E. Jones Center on March 14 to kick off the 14 month celebration of UNCP's 125th anniversary.

The event featured performances by Miss UNCP 2012 Jocelyn Hunt, Victoria Huggins, Dark Water Rising, UNCP cheerleaders and the UNCP pep band.

Television talk show host Cecil Chandler of WPDE-TV served as emcee for the festivities.

Chancellor Kyle R. Carter arrived at the celebration riding on a motorcycle. Carter then took to the stage and addressed the crowd.

"We're going to be celebrating for the next 14 months until commencement 2013," Carter said.

Others who were honored at the celebration included:

  • Beulah Mae Ransom Cormier of the classes of 1939 and 1952,
  • Cattie Mae Hunt of the class of 1941
  • Tessie Hunt of the class of 1942.
  • Larry Barnes, class of 1971, who was the first African American to enroll in the university.
  • NCAA Wrestling National Champion Mike Williams.
Steven Roberts Original Desserts donated the biggest cake in UNCP history that was served for everyone in attendance.

Carter gave credit to the Planning Commitee for their hard work.

More events will occur in the coming months, such as during the football season and Homecoming weekend, as the University celebrates its 125th anniversary until spring commencement in 2013.
