UNCP student teaches art to senior citizens

Georgia Ivie, a graduate student getting her M.A. at UNCP, hosted an Art Center Student Show at the Pine Street Senior Center in Lumberton on March 24.

The bulk of her students are beginners but looking at their artwork, one could never tell.

Artwork consisting of light houses, solitary birds and barns adorn tables lined for spectators at the Pine Street Center.             Each piece is carefully done, with lots of heart and careful consideration when it came to each brush stroke.

“I have been here since October 2006 and Georgia’s classes have grown in number. The exhibit was a success, all the students had some really good paintings overall.” Tonya Alford, coordinator of the Pine St. Center said.

She teaches the gridding method, where you sketch your drawing on a one-inch grid and then double it to two inches, where you sketch on canvas and then paint.

“Georgia has a fantastic outlook and is very dedicated to her students, they mean the world to her.” Alford said.

Ivie teaches pottery classes and oil-painting classes for anyone 55 and older (senior citizens) at the Mimosa Street Art Center every Monday and Thursday.

“I have been teaching these classes for over a year now.” Ivie said.  She refers to her goal as “teaching perspective.”

Ivie believes that the frame around the artwork “can make or break the picture.”

"We enjoy it; we just have so much fun. Georgia is wonderful,” artist Carolyn Wilkerson said.
