Rumba on the Lumber offers food, music and fun

The city of Lumberton, with the help of their sponsors the Robeson Road Runners, is hosting a weekend of fun and activities on March 3 and 4 in downtown Lumberton.

The slogan for the event is “A festival of food, movement, music and arts.”

"The Rumba on the Lumber will be a fun event for everyone involved. We just want everybody to have a good time. Whether it's running or spending time with the family or tasting chili,"Jess Neelon said.

The Rumba on the Lumber is a weekend of fun scheduled for March 3 and 4 starting at 6 p.m. March 3 and continuing through March 4.

The festivities begin with the Allen Orthopedic Friday Night Expo, a new addition to Rumba on the Lumber. This family night has activities for kids, a spaghetti dinner, dancing and the music of Craig Woolard.

The Family Fun Mile, sponsored by BB&T and Time Warner Cable, begins at 10 a.m. on March 4 in the Downtown Plaza.

This free event invites families to run a mile together and provides all kids with a meal free of charge.

The Lumbee River EMC Kids Zone, another activity for kids, will also happen at 10 a.m. and end at 2 p.m.

Contests, games, prizes, arts and crafts as well as face painting are just a few of the many activities offered.

After the Family Fun Mile, the LRA 5k will begin at 11 a.m. at the Downtown Plaza.

This 5k race is a quality race for walkers and runners in the area. Also, any participants who registered for the race by Feb. 21 and attend the Lumberton Area Chamber of Commerce meeting will be eligible to win two free airline tickets donated by Debbie's Destinations.
The Budweiser Chili Cook-off will last from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with chili tasting from well over 30 teams and music by the river.

Judges of the chili cook off include University of North Carolina at Pembroke head football coach Pete Shinnick, Director of Donor Relations, Teresa Oxendine, and Miss UNCP, Jorgiana Martin. There will also be entertainment by Coldshot and drinks from Budweiser.

Rumba on the Lumber will end with the Rumba after Five, held at Black Water Grille located at 111 West 3rd St.

This wrap up of the festival features pictures from the weekend, refreshments as well as recognition of everyone who participated in the event as well as residents of Lumberton and the surrounding areas.
