Food drive benefits Boys & Girls Club
By Lauren Allen
Campaign 460, a public relations campaign team at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, is having its first annual food drive kick-off event for the Boys & Girls Club on March 29. The event will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the University Quad, in between Old Main and the Sampson-Livermore library.
The event features a talent showcase, guest speakers, free food coupons and refreshments. Talents being performed are singing, tap dancing, piano and tribal dancing.
Admission to the event is two non-perishable items per guest. The food drive and talent show is just the beginning for what Campaign 460 has planned.
The students, who are all seniors and have been working on this campaign since the beginning of spring semester, are starting a food bank at the Boys & Girls Club, which will remain open even after they graduate from UNCP.
"These students turned a class project into something real," says Dr. Dandan Liu, assistant professor in the mass communications department and the professor for the public relations capstone course.
The Boys & Girls Club, which is located at 700 Roberts Ave. in Pembroke, hopes to eventually recruit high school students to manage the food bank.
Boxes to drop off non-perishable items will be located at the Wal-Mart and Food Lion of Pembroke, the Baptist Student Union center, and various locations throughout the UNCP campus, as well as select churches. Volunteers are needed to help with the Wednesday kick-off event.
People are needed to collect and organize all non-perishable items that are dropped off, help serve food and refreshments and help pass out flyers. Those who are interested in volunteering can contact Dan Henry at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
"We would love for the community to come out and support this event because a town without hunger is a town with heart," said Henry, who is also the team captain of Campaign 460.To learn more information about Campaign 460's first annual food drive, watch the community broadcast hosted by Foxy 99.1 on March 26.
