Robert Canida, left, director for the Office of Multicultural and Minority Affairs, offers holiday greetings to the staff and children of the Baptist Children’s Home. Canida helped organize the third annual pre-Thanksgiving dinner, which was prepared for the children by OMMA’s Council of Presidents.

Laughter floated from the dining room of Carter Hall on Nov. 15 at the Baptist Children’s Home.

Inside, 30 youth enjoyed a pre-Thanksgiving dinner, prepared by the Office of Multicultural and Minority Affairs’ Council of Presidents.

Student organizations, led by the National Council of Negro Women, arrived the night before to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

Members from the African American Student Organization, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the 10% Society also participated.

“It’s basically a gift for the children,” said Joshua “J.T.” Batchelor, president of NAACP.

Festive tables in green and orange were scattered with leaves and candles, while the children talked over turkey, sweet potatoes and dessert.

Sophomore Preston “P.J.” Siler sang a rendition of the gospel “His Eye is on the Sparrow” in honor of the occasion.

President Ray Pearson of AASO said he enjoys the fellowship with children.

“I love it every year we have it,” he said. “It’s something I’ve grown into.”

NCNW member Ebony Terry said her organization has participated in the Thanksgiving event for the past two years. Terry said

NCNW also volunteers their time at Odum during the school year.

“The girls are always happy to see us,” she said.
