Colorado Plateau photo gallery:
beauty of the western states explored by UNCP students

Photos by Scott Ammons

Nine students from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke enrolled
in a May 2005 geology field experience offered by assistant professor
Dr. Lee Phillips and headed west. They ended up on the Colorado Plateau,
which stretches across Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico, and
showcases the ever-changing geological wonders in scores of state
and national parks, monuments and national recreational areas.
For 10 days, the students witnessed the beauty and splendor of these
natural areas, the many micro-climates that form its foundations,
and the different species of plant and wildlife that call the plateau home.
Books were not mandatory for the class, only a pen and notebook,
a good pair of hiking boots, comfortable socks, canteens of water
and an inquisitive mind. Pine Needle editor Scott Ammons,
who was one of the students, decided also to stash a camera
in his backpack. Here is a recollection of the trip in a gallery of
20 photos selected from among more than 1,000 he snapped along the trek.
