Financial Aid office offers to help students
FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
Students can stop by the computer lab in room 1254 Oxendine Science Bldg. every Friday from 1-5 p.m. to receive assistance in filling out and filing the FAFSA form electronically.
Students must bring these items with them to the lab in order to file the aid application: The student's Federal 1040 Income Tax Return and W-2 forms. The parents Federal 1040 Income Tax return and W-2 forms. It would be helpful if students would bring their four-digit federal pin numbers with them.
If students do not remember what their pin numbers are, they can go to www.pin.ed.gov and receive assistance on retrieving them.
The lab will be open each Friday throughout the semester in order to assist students in filing for financial aid.
The priority deadline for filing for aid is March 15. Students who apply late run the risk of losing out on several sources of state grant aid.
Bruce Blackmon, director of financial aid, says that upperclassmen, juniors and seniors in particular, are notorious for not filing for aid on time.
The office awards nearly 1000 students between July 1 and the time school begins.
This puts our staff under tremendous stress to try to keep up with the demand for services. We end up taking care of panicked returning students when our attention should be focused on creating a good experience for the incoming freshmen.
