Tuition will go up for 2007-2008

By Scott Ammons

In February, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors approved a tuition and fees increase for all schools within the UNC system for the 2007/2008 academic school year.

Some universities increased tuition and fees for in-state students by as much as 10 percent.
UNC President Erskine Bowles expressed his concern with the escalating rise in tuition and said he hopes to control it with a ‘Tuition Cap Proposal.’
The proposal places a 6.5 percent annual cap on campus-initiated tuition increases for the next four years, although certain debt service fees are excluded.
“It’s affordable, and that’s the most important thing—to hold down cost of a college degree for our kids. At last, we have a cap on campus-initiated tuition,” Bowles said in an interview with WRAL news.
“The national average for tuition at regional universities like UNCP is between $5,000 and $5,200 a year. However, UNCP is $1,500 to $2,000 below that,” said Chancellor Allen C. Meadors.
The majority of the increase will be used to fund financial aid, faculty salaries and academic aid. Marvin Jacobs, president of the Student Government Association, said, “If it helps us build student morale and keep faculty here, I’m all for it.”
The increase now goes to the state legislature.
