Pine and Oak will be smoke free

By Dan Cole
Staff Writer

Effective the Fall 2007 semester, the first two floors of Pine Hall and all of Oak Hall will be smoke-free.  Preston Swiney, dean of Students, says, “We’re having more and more requests for a smoke-free environment,” and that “most state buildings are smoke-free currently.”

By 2008, Pine Hall will join Oak in being completely smoke-free.

Swiney says that the main goal is to have all residence halls become smoke-free in the near future.

Swiney says that additional areas of Oak, once completed, will be alcohol-free.

This includes those participating in the Teaching Fellows and Honors College program.

Residents will be required to sign a pledge to refrain from possession or consumption of alcohol on the alcohol-free floor.

According to Swiney, there has been a substantial positive reaction to these policies.
