As the N.C. primary approaches, the campaign for Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama has been in full force in the southeast portion of the state.

Supporters of Sen. Obama have been especially active on the UNCP campus.

On April 11, Tatyana Marisol Ali visited Moore Hall’s auditorium to speak on behalf of the senator’s campaign.

Ali, who is best known for her role as ‘Ashley Banks’ on the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has participated in Obama’s campaign by traveling the country and lending her voice to the viral video ‘Yes We Can’ produced by Will.i.am.

On April 21, Detroit Democrat and second most senior member of the House of Representatives John Conyers Jr., spoke in the UC annex on behalf of Sen. Obama’s campaign.

With Obama in office, Rep. Conyers hopes to accomplish passing bill H.R. 40, The Commission to Study Reparations Proposals for African American Act, which will force the U.S. government to make restitutions for slavery.

According to Rep. Conyers’s website, one of his main interests is also to revitalize America’s healthcare, and he believes Obama can accomplish this for the country.

Sen Obama’s campaign is also encouraging students to participate in the election by taking advantage of ‘One-Stop Early Voting,’ where community members can register and vote at the same place.

The voting site will be at the Pembroke Public Library on 413 Blaine St. from April 17 to May 3.

According to a press release issued by Sen. Obama and his campaign, transportation will be offered to students from campus to the voting location.
