Mighty J’s has officially been sold, and the last day they will be open is Sept. 28.
The owners, Jason Kennedy and James Freeman, opened the sports bar on Oct. 27, 2010, after graduating from UNCP.
“We are closing because we are figuring out that we want to do something different, and it is time to move on,” Kennedy said. “We’ve enjoyed our time here and one of our biggest goals was to be the first place to do this in Pembroke, and we achieved it and gained success off of it.”
The new company that bought Mighty J’s does not have a set date to open, yet.
They will be closed for a few weeks for renovations.
“We believe it is going to be something similar to Mighty J’s, but we don’t know the actual name of the company. It will be similar to the wings and sports bar vibe,” Kennedy said.
Senior Timmy Dunn said, “Mighty J’s is always the place to go when you want to have a good time with friends. There will never be another like Mighty J’s, and it was a big part of my time here at UNCP.”
“I’m upset Mighty J’s is closing because jumping out of college and owning my own sports restaurant was a big deal for me, and I love Mighty J’s,” Kennedy said. “But at the same time, with the business aspect, I’m excited because we sold it and made a profit.”
“We want to thank all of our customers, the university and the town for the support,” Kennedy said.
Mighty J’s is working on reduced hours until they officially close.
They will be open Wednesdays - Saturdays beginning at 5 p.m.
