By Jon Baez
The event was held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the A.D. Gallery in Locklear Hall and featured a variety of artwork from UNCP Art Department Faculty.
Assistant Professor and A.D. Gallery Director Carla Rokes said, “This is an opportunity for students to become more familiar with the faculty and what we teach them.”
Exhibitions included works from faculty members James Biederman, Julie Floss, Richard Gay, Joann Hart, Janette Hopper, Margie Beth Labadie, John Antoine Labadie, Tulla Lightfoot, Ralph Steeds, Garth Swanson, Stephen Robison, Carla Rokes, Brandon Sanderson, Adam Walls and Cary Allen Wilson.
“I like that I can look at the faculty’s artwork; they give me ideas as to things that I could create myself,” said junior art major Caitlin McKone.
She added that viewing the faculty’s work gave her inspiration as she works toward her major. The reception also offered refreshments and provided an opportunity to share artistic ideas and simple appreciations of the work of the faculty.. The A.D. Gallery showcases work from Art Department Faculty once a year.
According to the website for the A.D. Gallery, the faculty noticed a need for a fulltime, permanent exhibition space in the 1970s and converted a faculty lounge into a gallery.
In 2005, the A.D. Gallery replaced the converted lounge with 960 square feet of exhibition space and a large skylight. Normal hours for the A.D. Gallery are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. and Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. However, it is closed on weekends and when classes are not in session.
