To kick off the 2006 Track and Field season, Alesia Walters qualified for the Indoor Nationals by setting a new UNC-Pembroke women's shot put record.

Walters, a junior at UNCP, is a member of the track and field team, where she also participates in discus, javelin and hammer. This is not the first time that Walters has broken the school record.

"I also hold the discus and hammer record. I broke the records on several occasions last year," she said.

The meet was held at the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport on Feb. 3 and Feb. 4.
Walters exceeded the old mark of 42 feet 7 inches, with a toss of 44 feet 1.25 inches. Walters also placed second at the invitational.

"I was excited. I'm still kind of in shock but I don't want to get over excited. We have a whole schedule ahead of us. I just take every meet at a time, and I try to improve each go around," she said.
