UNCP wrestling beats Limestone
By Ryan Kelly
On Jan. 11, the UNCP wrestling team ended a three-meet losing streak as they out-lasted the visiting Limestone Saints and earned a 24-19 victory at the Jones Center.
Braves’ senior All-American Derek Brunson stepped up and earned a 22-7 technical-fall victory over Mike Walsh in one of the final matches of the night to keep the Braves on top and preserve the victory.
Losing streak ends
Willie Hilton looked to regain his All-American form and it showed as he beat Dustin Baynes 11-4 in the 149 pound bout. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the senior.
The Braves opened up with an early setback as senior Adam Dedmon was pinned by Limestone's Matt Hall only 38 seconds into the match.
UNCP bounced back with five straight victories from Hilton, Kendall Nelson, Brandon Bradley, Victor Hojilla and Rashaad Saunders to take a 19-6 lead.
Saunders was opportunistic in his first dual-meet action of the season.
“My role on the team is to be the fighter,” Saunders said, “I’m always having to step up and prove myself to everyone.”
Saunders made a case for a starting spot by beating Greg Satterfield in the 165 pound bout 12-7.
“I don't ask why. I just be thankful that I get to go out there and show what I can do,” Saunders said.
Hojilla added to his impressive freshman season by scoring a major decision over Dusty Leutz. Nelson, also a freshman, shut out Matt Ross 5-0.
Erik Stancil injured his shoulder in the second period of the Heavyweight match and was forced to forfeit.
Brunson's efforts led to his being named the UNCP student-athlete of the week by UNCPBraves.com, the university’s official athletics site.
