Mayes scholarship boosted

Members of the Phi Beta Sigma contributed $1000 to the Willie Mayes Jr. Endowed Wrestling Scholarship.

The scholarship is in memory of Mayes, a former All- American wrestler and member of Phi Beta Sigma  who was killed in an automobile accident days before his 1988 graduation.

“I knew Willie as a great wrestler, and we stay in contact with his mother,” said Kelley Lampkin, fellow fraternity brother and former basketball player from Fayetteville, N.C.

“I still have a picture of Willie with the whole chapter. He was a great brother, and it really hurt when he died,” Lampkin said.
Retired UNCP wrestling coach P.J. Smith, who coached Mayes, is pleased with the continued support of the scholarship.

Additional funding for the scholarship came from step shows, car washes as well as donations.

“The scholarship perpetuates the things that Willie believed in by helping a student-athelete. Willie was an exemplary individual,” Smith said.
