Women’s Soccer piles on offense in crushing Queens College 4-1

By Ryan Kelly

UNCP scored three quick goals within four minutes early in the second half to secure a 4-1 victory over visiting Queens on Sept. 5.
Freshman midfielder Sam Dunn scored her first career goal in the 24th minute off a Jamie Clarke free kick.
The cross was punched out by Queens' goalkeeper Kristen Kornacki but Dunn headed a rebound over the defense and into goal.
Senior forward Sarah Day kept her scoring streak alive in the 51st minute with her third goal in as many games.
Day corralled a low pass in the box from Dunn, turned her defender and put her shot in the far corner underneath a diving Kornacki.
“I actually thought the keeper was a defender,” said Day. “I just put it on my left and slotted it in.”
The goal turned out to be the game-winner, Day's third of the season.
Clarke had another assist in the 53rd minute after sending in a long-ball over the top to Lefke Boysen.
Boysen hit a one-timed volley in mid-air to the far post to put the Lady Braves up 3-0.
The offensive onslaught continued only a minute later. Freshman Faye Corbett picked up a loose ball just outside the box, danced through two defenders and juked another to her left before pulling off a left-footed shot to the far post for her first goal of the season.
“I couldn't be more proud of this team,” said head coach Lars Andersson.
“Statistically we've been dominating all of our games, but oftentimes one to nothing can be the most dangerous lead you can have,” said Andersson. “I was pleased that these girls didn't let up in the second half.”
Junior goalkeeper Whitney Beverly had her shutout streak of 274 minutes stopped in the 83rd minute when Queens' Hayley Pasko found Katherine Johnson open on the right side of the box for a one-timed goal.
UNCP (4-0) outshot Queens (1-4) 25-9.
