By Markus Franklin

UNCP  men’s soccer battled Lander University to a 0-0 tie for 90 minutes on Oct. 6 before Christian Mason put a shot into the back of the net in the 105th minute of double overtime giving Lander a 1-0 Peach Belt Conference victory.
The Braves (2-9-0, 1-2-0 PBC) outshot Lander 22-14, but it was the Bearcats’ final shot that denied victory from UNCP.
UNCP keeper Dean Moore fumbled a free kick and Mason was there to score the rebound for the game’s only goal.
Zach Rowell and Davis Stephenson led the stout UNCP defense which faced a Lander team ranked No. 1 in the Peach Belt Conference coming in with a 7-1-1 record.

The UNCP offense was led by Ian Wagner and Miguel Ferrer who constantly confused Lander’s midfield with crisp passes and speedy play.
Lander (8-1-1, 3-1 PBC) was aggressive throughout the whole game as it showed with them committing 13 fouls, seven of them coming in the second half alone.
In the 86th minute, UNCP had a golden opportunity taken away from them with a questionable foul called against them.
The Braves got their best chance of the game to score less than three minutes into the first extra period when Mason Peacock found a loose ball and stared at an open net, but with his heels on the end line, Lander’s Ryan Thorman cleared the ball to keep the score at a deadlocked at zero.
UNCP’s next Peach Belt Conference game is scheduled for Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. versus Limestone.
