The Braves celebrate a goal in their Peach Belt Conference victory over Francis Marion on Oct. 10 at home. The Black and Gold improved to 3-3-0 in conference play this season.
An early second half goal from Rico Laitinen gave the UNCP men's soccer team a 2-1 Peach Belt Conference win over Francis Marion on Oct. 10.
The win moved the Black and Gold to 3-3-0 in conference play.
The Braves' junior goalkeeper Ryan Hanson stopped nine of the 10 shots the Patriots put on goal.
UNCP opened the game by posting five shots in the first 15 minutes of play.
The fifth shot that the Braves took gave them an early 1-0 lead as Matt McDougall took a rebound off the goal post and found the back of the net.
In the following nine minutes, the Braves took four more shots with all of them sailing away from the goal.
In the 31st minute, Francis Marion knotted the score at one a piece as Cody Farrier sent a shot on goal that went past Hanson for his third goal of the season.
Both teams traded out shots to end the half and to go into the break with the score tied.
At the 49-minute mark, UNCP's Martin Tomter took a shot on goal that was saved by the Patriot goalkeeper Logan Fisher.
In less than a minute, the Braves were attacking the opposing goal again as Laitinen received a pass from Daniel Bought and took a shot from 30 yards out that broke the tie.
The visitors picked up the offensive pressure and looked to tie the score again after the goal but Hanson was able to stop all shots that Francis Marion put on goal to close out the game.
The Braves outshot the visitors 18-13, but Francis Marion was able to put more shots on goal as they had 10 to UNCP's six.
Of the Black and Gold's 18 shots, 12 were taken by the trio of Tomter, Laitinen and Sean Hoek.
