Braves secure series against Bearcats

The UNCP baseball team welcomed 11th ranked Lander for a three game weekend series on April 6 and 7.

After splitting games one and two, the Braves were able to grab a win in the rubber match to take the PBC conference tilt.

Game one

The series opened in grand fashion as the Black and Gold defeated the visitors with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning.

Senior Josh Haley recorded the game winning hit as he singled through the right side with two outs in the inning scoring junior Drew Alford. Haley had a game high five hits in the contest.

After posting one run in the first, the Braves faced a 4-1 deficit as the visitors bounced back in the top of the fourth with a four run inning.

The Black and Gold responded in the bottom of the sixth frame as the home team responded with a big inning to take a 5-4 lead.

Sophomore catcher Max Gagnon drove in three of the four runs off a two out double into left center field.

Gagnon scored in the next at bat off a Haley base knock.

Lander posted one run in the top half of the seventh inning to tie the score at five to send the game into extra innings before the Braves captured the win.

Game Two

In game two of the series, UNCP ran out to an early 2-1 lead before the visiting Bearcats posted eight runs in the final four innings to take a 9-2 win and tie the series at a game apiece.

Senior second baseman Aaron Parnell hit in both runs for the Braves as he went 3-for-4 at the plate. Haley also went 3-for-4 batting for the Black and Gold.

In the opening frame UNCP posted a run as Parnell singled up the middle to score Haley.

Two innings later, the Braves posted another run in the same fashion as Parnell singled into right field.

Kyle Adair, Tyler Potter, Victor Zecca and Brad Bridgeman each added one hit to the cause to record the other four hits for the Black and Gold.

Jordan DeLoatch received his second loss of the season for the Braves as he went five innings while striking out four batters.

DeLoatch allowed five runs with four being earned while on the mound for the Braves.

Game Three

UNCP captured the series with a game three winbehind a big first inning at the plate for the Braves.

The Black and Gold had a strong showing from senior Alex Pearce on the hill as he went 7 2/3 fanning five batters while allowing four runs.

Down 2-0 after the opening half of the first inning, the Braves came to the plate to try to take the lead.

With two outs in the first and the bases loaded, the Black and Gold plated its first run of the game as Parnell was walked in.

In the following at bat, third baseman Jordan Edgerton hit a bases-clearing three-RBI double into right centerfield.

The home team posted The home team posted fourth and sixth innings en route to clinching the final game of the series.
