After competing at the 117th installment of the prestigious Penn Relays, junior long distance runner Pardon Ndhlovu was finally able to conquer the men's 10,000 meter run in Philadelphia on April 26 as he crossed the finish line in first place in the collegiate race.

The junior was one of the 34 student-athletes who competed in the race and provisionally qualified for the Division II National Championships, along with 18 others long distance runners.

Ndhlovu finished 10 seconds short of automatically qualifying.

Ndhlovu recorded a personal best with a time of 29:31.58 finishing a single second ahead of the second place finisher Eddie Novara from the State University of New York at Geneseo.

Craig Murphy from Iona College rounded out the top three with a time of 29:37.55.

Ndholvu is the first Black and Gold athlete to earn a first place victory at the Penn Relays.

Gary Henry set the school record in 1982, finishing the event with a time of 28:47.00.

Ndhlovu, a Zimbabwe native, shaved 46 seconds off of his previous personal best of 30:17.12 in the 10,000 meters run that Ndhovlu recorded at the Raleigh Relays on March 30.

Last season at the Penn Relays, the junior competed in the men's 5,000 meter run and finished in third place.

Ndhlovu has competed in the meet for the past three seasons and has a set new personal best in every event he has competed in since his debut at the prominent event.

The Penn Relays is the oldest and largest relay meet in the nation and has averaged over 50,000 spectators in the last eight seasons.

Only the Olympics and World Championships receive more spectators than the Penn Relays.
